MARRIAGE ABSTRACT – SHORT FORM
This document may be used for proof of marriage by some government agencies. This document may also be used by some foreign countries.
Marriage record which has the bride and groom’s names, date married, date of recording, and certificate number issued by the state or county.
MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE – LONG FORM
This is an official document that serves as a “Proof of Marriage” This document is required to update your records or change your name on the following:
Social Security Card, Driver’s License, Insurance, Passport, Immigration, Banking, Medical Records, IRS, Adoption, Military Purposes
If you are in the U.S. this is the “Proof of Marriage” required by the agencies.
Marriage record which has bride and groom’s names, date married, date of recording, and certificate number issued by the state or county, signature of witnesses, minister’s name, name and physical address of the location the ceremony was performed in.
MARRIAGE LICENSE – NOT A PROOF OF MARRIAGE
This document is the document obtained prior to the marriage ceremony. It is required for people who have been married more than once to have their name changed.
It may also be required in addition to your marriage certificate by:
Social Security Card, Driver’s License, Insurance, Passport, Immigration, Banking, Medical Records, IRS, Adoption, Military Purposes.
This alone is not proof of marriage.

APOSTILLE
An apostille is issued by the Secretary of State’s office to authenticate and verify that the signature of the State Official is genuine on the document to be used in a foreign country.
Countries that participate in the Hague Convention of 1961 will require an apostille of the marriage certificate for the country to recognize the wedding. Some countries may require an apostille of both marriage certificate and marriage license. It is recommended you check with requesting agencies where you reside.
Some Countries may require an Apostille from the State of Nevada to register your marriage.
